I am my own Special Interest

June 30th, 2004 by barklage

I won’t appear on any tracking data because I haven’t given $200 to any one candidate, but what the hell. I’ll share who I’ve sent money to this election cycle, and how much I’ve given… and why.

Another one bites the dust

June 28th, 2004 by barklage

Late last night, I noticed Kenny the fish had kicked the bucket. (No South Park jokes, please.) This after being chased around the tank by Kelly, the larger, more dominant Red Zebra, for a few weeks.

I’m still not sure what happened, or what I keep doing wrong. I’m not going to buy replacements just to have them die on me again. In fact, I’m tempted just to get rid of the whole aquarium, or fill it with decorations but no fish. Sigh.

Written in large, friendly letters on my blog are the words…

June 27th, 2004 by barklage

Via Neil Gaiman:

Hardcore fans know that the very first incarnation of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was a British radio series. Twenty-five years later, the surviving members of the original radio cast have reunited for a new series adapting the last three books. Several previews are available at the link above. The first series is due in September, and a second will be out in early 2005.

This has apparently been in the works for quite some time, as Douglas Adams himself voices one of the roles, recorded before his death a few years ago. I really hope the series is made available for download for non-Brit listeners.

Meanwhile, filming has begun on the Hitchhiker’s movie. (The surprisingly appropriate cast list is here.) There seems to be a Hitchhiker’s renaissance brewing…

Well, that answers my question

June 27th, 2004 by barklage

Turns out F911 is playing very well elsewhere, as it made $21.6 million this weekend to take first place, edging out the Wayans brothers anti-comedy White Chicks, which had three times the screen count. It’s the first documentary to ever top the box office.

Meanwhile, audience reactions are surprisingly positive. The only people who hate it are the ones who are paid to hate it: Rush, O’Reilly, etc. (Do you really think any of those guys believe their own bullshit? They know where their paychecks come from.) Even Dale Earnhardt, Jr. recommended F911 to his pit crew. It looks like my worries about it only playing to the Left were unfounded.

Rockin’ in the Free World

June 26th, 2004 by barklage

Just got back from the late late show of Fahrenheit 9/11. The show started late because the previous, sold-out show ran long due to projector malfunction. My showing was about 3/4 full. (For a documentary in a mall on the conservative east side of Tucson. That’s impressive. I can only imagine how it’s playing elsewhere.)

Go Cards!

June 24th, 2004 by barklage

The Cardinals already had the best record in the NL and possession of first place in the Central. Now they’ve taken two out of three from the Cubbies. Take that, Dan and Laurenn!

Meeting up

June 24th, 2004 by barklage

Just got back from a John Kerry meetup. I might end up doing a web site for a local congressional candidate. We’ll see.

My new workout is working out

June 24th, 2004 by barklage

I’m in week 3 of a new six-week gym regimen — light weights, high reps, and slowly increasing one or the other every week. I’ve been able to stick to it so far, which is good, and judging by my scale this morning, I think I’ve gained a pound or two of muscle already.

Six weeks will take me up to San Diego Comic-Con. I’ll take a week off for that (and booze away all my hard work), then do cardio-only for a couple of weeks before getting back onto weights.

Fascinating, I know, but this is my blog, so there. Besides, it’s good news.

Speaking of getting huge, here’s a story making the rounds about a super-strong mutant toddler in Germany. His mutation blocks production of myostatin, which limits muscle growth. This being reality instead of a comic book, at puberty he is more likely to die of heart failure than don a costume and battle the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Even if he survives, the poor guy will probably end up looking like a Rob Liefeld drawing.

(Hopefully) Booting Nader in AZ

June 23rd, 2004 by barklage

I voted for Ralph Nader in 2000. I wasn’t all that politically knowledgable at the time and was convinced that there really was “no difference” between Gore and Bush, between Democrats and Republicans. Ha ha on me.

Zombie! Zombie! Zombie!

June 23rd, 2004 by barklage

Leave it to Jim Massey to come up with a new twist on the zombie-horror genre. Here are the first five pages of the tale of a poor, persecuted zombie who just wants to eat brains in peace.

I’m already sold on this comic. It doesn’t seem fair to have to wait until Winter for the rest of it.
